Leadership Is Key

Governance is more than just a set of institutional arrangements to ensure the effective functioning of society. Many countries have democratic elections, separation of powers and systems to hold their bureaucracies accountable to the legislature but they are not necessarily well governed. Effective systems of governance are necessary but the key is the quality of leadership that resides in all the institutions of governance. In fact, quality institutions of governance follow naturally from good leadership.

Lee Kuan Yew:The First Prime Minister Of The Republic Of Singapore


As co-founder and first secretary-general of the People's Action Party (PAP), he led the party to a landslide victory in 1959, oversaw the separation of Singapore from the Federation of Malaysia in 1965 and its subsequent transformation from a relatively underdeveloped colonial outpost with no natural resources into a "First World", Asian Tiger. He has remained one of the most influential political figures in South-East Asia.

Goh Chok Tong:The Second Prime Minister Of The Republic Of Singapore


Goh Chok Tong is the Senior Minister of Singapore and the chairman of the central bank of Singapore, the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He also served as the second Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore from November 28, 1990 to August 12, 2004, succeeding Lee Kuan Yew.

Lee Hsien Loong:The Third Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore


Lee Hsien Loong is the third and current Prime Minister of Singapore. Lee Hsien Loong is married to Ho Ching, who is and was the former Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the government-owned Temasek Holdings. He is the eldest son of former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

David Marshall: Singapore's First Chief Minister




Marshall rose to prominence in the late 1940s as a brilliant young criminal lawyer whose eloquence and extraordinary legal understanding won him numerous court cases. Marshall subsequently entered politics at the head of the Labor Front party and became Singapore's first elected Chief Minister between 1955 and 1956.
